Design and Flow Open call for designers and students
Design and Flow is kicking off their inaugural project by addressing the themes of Migration and
Travel , all under the umbrella of Transitions.
Migration is defined as “to go from one country, region, or place to another”
or “to shift, as from one system, mode of operation, or enterprise to another;” it can
happen once or repeatedly. It includes, but is not limited to: Immigration defined as “the
action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country”, and, Emigration defined as
“to leave one country (usually your own) or region to settle (take up residence) in
another”.
Travel is defined as “to go from one place to another, as by car, train, plane, or ship; take
a trip; journey” or “to move or go from one place or point to another” or “to proceed or
advance in any way” or “to pass, or be transmitted, as light or sound”.
In our transient lives, movement from one place or state to another is common, if not
expected.
Our boundaries are constantly being redefined, both physically and
conceptually, and our perspectives and states of mind shifting between old and new
paradigms. Yet all this movement is creating new challenges and reinforcing existing
ones, intimate issues of belonging and identity become critical: Voluntary versus forced
migration, passports, visas, adapting to new transit regulations and technologies,
refugees, illegal immigrants, acceptance and integration into new cultures and societies,
while needing to keep connections to native lands and homes alive.
How does it work?
D&F is centered around flow-related themes that we launch on a yearly basis and
encompasses a plethora of activities. We invite partners, collaborators and students to
design interventions and in turn support them in disseminating their work through a
variety of publication outlets, curated exhibitions and a store offering both proprietary
and open designs. D&F is based in New York City and has partners from all design backgrounds and
corners of the world.
