The STAGG EKG+ by Sergio Venegas Gamboa

MS Data Visualization
Data Visualization & Information Aesthetics

Sergio is a first year Ms Strategic Design and Management student leveraging the incredible programs offered by The New School to audit a course that interested him outside of his program. The Data Visualization & Information Aesthetics class he’s auditing provides a foundation for graphically representing information. Students learn how to make complex data easily understood through visual patterns. Areas of classical and modern arrangements of 2D space – through grids and other systems – are explored. This class is useful for every area of design, as the ability to handle information and abstract data plays an important role in most design projects – from websites to mass communications.

In this assignment, students were asked to contextualize a human-made object in such a way so as to make users understand the nature, purpose, history and materiality of the item.

Given his affinity for all things coffee, Sergio chose to represent the STAGG EKG+, an electric kettle that allows users to achieve the ideal water temperature for brewing coffee. The intent behind the graphic is to inform the audience that “temperature of water” is a fundamental aspect of their coffee experience and to display the sleek minimalist design of the object.
