James Clotfelter

James is a multifaceted designer, maker and tinkerer currently pursuing a MFA dual degree in Lighting Design and Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons the New School for Design. James’ practice is committed to collaborative and socially conscious work that builds awareness, connectedness and that endeavors to wake people up. Inspired by a background in theatre and dance, he use improvisation, mechanics, performance, and creative management to design real-time environments, interruptive conditions and the systems that support experience. James is an Artistic Associate with Pig Iron Theatre Company and in 2005 co-founded the design laboratory, Mlab, which realized numerous production designs specifically tailored for efficient and sustainable touring in the performing arts. He is currently engaged as an IDEO/Knight Foundation fellow working to improve community connectedness in Charlotte, NC.
