Every night in NYC, there are 127,000 homeless individuals– 24,000 of which are single adults in shelter, and 4,000 more individuals are unsheltered. In an environment where migration has reached record highs, housing supply has reached record lows, and the Supreme Court is hearing a case that could criminalize unsheltered homelessness, the need for innovative housing solutions has never been more urgent. Hidden Value of Sawdust 2024
My project aims to tackle the issue of wood waste generated by small businesses and individual woodworkers, specifically the challenge of repurposing sawdust which accounts for half of their wood waste. I saw an opportunity to prolong the use of sawdust and created a versatile and natural sawdust mixture that can be used to create a variety of objects or products. My end solution challenges the concept of waste by creatively and affordably repurposing sawdust into functional and beautiful objects, thereby creating something valuable.
