Alumni Stories – Vanya Mittal

September 25, 2017

Who are you and what do you do?

I am Vanya Mittal (MS SDM Class of 2017). I am an Innovation and Design Strategist, and a novice entrepreneur. I am currently working with Doblin | Deloitte to help leading organizations create growing businesses rooted in real customer needs, untapped technologies, and business viability.

Where are you originally from?

I am originally from New Delhi, India.

What project/job/event/research are you currently working on? Please tell us a little about the impetus, content and expected impact of this work.

I recently wrapped up a project with Con Edison, New York. We designed 2 concepts (a service and a product) to promote energy efficiency and improve the quality of life of New Yorkers. Currently working on a project for a German firm.

In what ways did the work/research you did at Parsons prepare you for that
transition and the work you’re doing now?

  1.  Working with multi-disciplinary student from across the globe gave me the exposure I would have otherwise never received. It not only made me a more empathetic person but also taught me the power of listening and the concept of never killing any idea at the very beginning. I believe that these characteristics are the foundation to anyone who want to work and excel in such a field.
  2. In addition, learning from such experienced and knowledgable professors from the industry was very insightful as you lived the process in real rather than just making more hypothetical projects. I not only got better at taking constructive feedback but also working and improving on them.
  3. Working at Parsons ELab, alongside Rhea was a great opportunity. Wearing multiple hats prepared me in different areas that I never realized can be so helpful.

How has the MS-SDM program challenged you to grow as a Strategic Designer?

Understanding and trusting the process was the key that I learnt throughout my journey at Parsons. The Program helped me frame my understanding of Human Centered Design and generate a greater interest towards the idea of sustainability. It challenged me to follow the theory of “Fail fast and Fail often”.

I am positive that the skills, the methods and the relationships that I developed over the past 2 years will always come in handy at any job I will take in the future.

If you were to give one piece of advice to current students, what would it be?

Enjoy the two years of student life (you won’t get them back) and absorb as much as you can
from both, inside and outside of the classroom (Hint: Do your readings).

What book are you reading right now?

Eleven Rings: The Soul Of Success by Phil Jackson
