Transdisciplinary Design

Lunch in Progress 2

We were visited on a recent Friday by our second lunch guest of the year, Jane Nisselson of Virtual Beauty. Jane is a film-maker, by trade, but that hardly describes her diverse talents adequately. She is an early “friend” of the Transdisciplinary program, having played a pivotal role in the conception and thinking behind Headspace: On Scent as Design in Spring 2010. Her films for that event were antic, whip smart, and sharp–just like Jane. Take a look at the film introduction she created for Headspace (here) to get an idea of her work.

In presenting some of her films to the students, it because immediately apparent just how much connection she shares with Charles and Ray Eames. Her obsessive need to “see” things through intense observation drives much of her scientific and fashion film projects. Take a long, meditative look at her film on models of molecules (here) to get a sense of what I mean. This work reverberates with the Eames’ film Blacktop, for example, in its unremitting gaze at the ordinary and the everyday.  Jane brings a deep love scientific visualization and explanation to her work, and viewing her films made me recall just how much of design is realized as a process of “seeing.” We’re hoping to “see” more of Jane, and so we’re now scheming on how to bring Jane back to host movie night.
