DUE + TUP THESIS BOOK 2019

The MS in Design and Urban Ecologies and MS in Theories of Urban Practice Class 2019 collectively produced an amazing body of work as part of their thesis projects this academic year by rethinking and shaping in meaningful ways theories, tools, approaches, and strategies related to urban and community practices. Their work was presented at the exhibition and symposium they organized under the name Shaping Critical Urban Practices. The event sparked interesting and needed conversations. Through their projects, they proved that by combining urban policy, planning, design, and activism and drawing from the strengths of different disciplines, new urban practices can emerge not only to generate a critical understanding of the local and global forces that impact our cities but also to challenge the status quo of the organizations, institutions and systems that shape urbanization processes and urban life. The diversity of their projects demonstrated that there is no a single formula to transform communities, neighborhoods, cities, and regions but cooperation, inclusion, and resilience are certainly key elements in any urban process to counteract social, economic, and environmental injustices. It was really rewarding to see the way they are shaping the urban practice.
