Dubravka

Wednesday October 7th Urban at Parsons will host “Don’t Stare so Romantically!”

Laws, Legality Laws and procedures have always been considered a nuisance from which architecture “suffers” and architects shy away from. In this talk, Dubravka Sekulić will explore the correlation between legal framework and land speculations, starting from roof extensions in Belgrade, to right to the city struggle in Zagreb, she will show how making of laws and procedures that shape built environment should not be left to technocrats influenced by capital. Or why are regulations so important that they cannot be left out from the process of design, and that this could be one of the places for the reengagement of the discipline with the society.

Dubravka is an architect researching transformations of contemporary cities. She is an author of “Glotzt Nicht so Romantisch! On Extralegal Space in Belgrade” and an editor of “Surfing the Black” and “Struggle for Everyday: the case of Peti park”. Currently she is a PhD fellow at the Institute for History and Theory of Architecture, Federal Technical Institute (ETH) Zürich, working on the relationships between Yugoslav construction industry and the Third World countries during the Cold War.
