The graduate programs at SDS were conceived to challenge students to respond to the increasingly difficult issues of the 21st century in the realms of business and management, urban design and theory, and transdisciplinary design.

“From the vexing challenges of sustainable growth to the disintegration of the United States’ 19th century infrastructure; from the intractable complications of risky human settlement patterns to the perverse co-presence of obesity and hunger epidemics in developed and developing countries; and from problems in our backyard to those of global span: the world is on fire and many of us believe that design can play a role in extinguishing some of the blazes. Or at least that is time for practitioners of design to move on from projects that privilege stylistic novelty to ones that grapple with meaningful social change.”

Radically reframing the study of cities.

The first graduate program of its kind in the United States, the Master of Science in Design and Urban Ecologies explores the development of urban space and its social, economic, political and environmental context. Bringing together the academic strengths of Parsons and other divisions of The New School, this practice-oriented, studio-based graduate program trains students to become agents of change, working with the communities and institutions that shape cities. Guided by urban activists from around the world, students confront urgent problems facing cities and develop pioneering research methodologies, design frameworks, and critical practices. The program is aimed at urbanists, design and planning professionals, social scientists, community leaders, and managers of nonprofit and government organizations that wish to critically address issues of contemporary urbanization.

Theories of Urban Practice (MA)

A new approach to urbanism.

The Master of Arts in Theories of Urban Practice reframes the study of urbanism and urban design as transformative practices that draw on an expanding body of knowledge, research, and action. The basic premise is that specific types of critical knowledge and creative thinking can transform cities in fundamental ways. This research-driven program is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced studies in urbanism or careers as urban researchers, designers, teachers, design critics, policy advisors, and leaders of nonprofit organizations, public agencies, private design and development firms, and innovative collaborative practices.

A new generation of designers.

The Graduate MFA Transdisciplinary Design at Parsons is an open experiment that gives form and substance to the emergent design practices that go beyond traditional disciplinary ones. Emphasizing collaborative design-led research, the MFA in Transdisciplinary Design (TransDesign) serves as an academic laboratory in New York City seeking to define the next phase of design practice globally. The complex problems that confront a networked 24/7 global culture call for broad design approaches. Parsons created the MFA in TransDesign for a new generation of designers who want to address pressing social issues using new ideas, tools and methods. Students work in cross-disciplinary teams, consider issues from multiple perspectives, gain insight from industry leaders, and emerge with a portfolio of projects showcasing design as a process for transforming the way we live in the 21st century.
