about design dialogues

The Design Dialogues site houses all online publications from the School of Design Strategies at Parsons School of Design.

This site is funded by the Stephan Weiss Lecture Series on Business Strategy, Negotiation and Innovation. This lectureship was launched in 2002 to commemorate the life of the late artist and sculptor Stephan Weiss, husband and business partner of the fashion designer Donna Karan. Weiss co-founded Donna Karan International in 1984, and was instrumental in every significant venture the company undertook: launching and structuring new brands, most notably the Donna Karan Beauty company; signing new licenses; establishing in-house legal and creative departments; devising its computer design technology; orchestrating the company’s initial public offering in 1996; and negotiating its sale to the current owner LVMH Moet Hennessy – Louis Vuitton.

about the school of design strategies

The School of Design Strategies is an experimental educational environment. We advance innovative approaches in design, business and education. In the evolving context of cities, services and ecosystems, we explore design as a capability and a strategy in the environmentally conscious practices of individuals, groups, communities and organizations. For more about the School of Design Strategies, visit the SDS Magazine.

2022

rapa surajaras

Canal Street frequently floods.

I want to change the perception that water is unwanted, effectively transforming a risk into a resource.

2022 is a series of iterative strategies for transitioning toward this future.

My project is titled 2022 and consists of a set of iterative strategies that accumulate toward this date. The development of each strategy was informed by my conversations with Lim Sokchanlina. We discussed how many art projects engage the past and the present, but also give people a sign or a sense of awareness of the future.

Once literally a canal, New York's Canal Street is prone to flooding. 2022 aims to change the perception of this water from a problem into a resource that is related to life. For me, this is not a gentle idea. I like how water covers and erases surfaces. With each storm surge, tide, and monsoon, water requires people to rearrange their movement patterns and sense of possibility. I also like how artists create places from spaces that are undergoing transformation.

To this end, I use a monkey cheek—a water control system that is popular in Thailand. It's typically used in peri-urban farmland areas to collect water during the rainy season for use during the dry season. Just like a monkey stores food in its cheek and releases it when its hungry, my project stores and releases water into gutters, fountains, ponds, and trenches according to seasonal precipitation. These new water features create a network of surfaces and spaces that are held in trust as public construction sites.
