Every Spring, students from the SDS start to take their final steps towards completing their theses, a necessary component of an impacting design education. Spending an entire year speculating, theorizing, experimenting, prototyping and editing, the thesis project is an opportunity for students to craft their area of expertise, preparing them to enter into the professional realm. Two Masters students from the MFA Transdisciplinary Design program, Nelson Loo and Namkyu Chun, both with prior experience in the fashion world, are using design to help revitalize the Garment District. Long an economic and cultural hub of NYC, the district has started to lag in recent years. In order to help re-envision and bolster its future, the two students have been using their thesis to start Fashion Lab NYC, a collaborative platform that touches an all sectors of the fashion industry, from manufacturing and production, to design and distribution.
