/Google/Arctic/Mars/ Round-Table

May 8, 2012
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

At Tuesday at 7pm, immediately following our conversation with Michael Gerrard, we will hear from a range of speakers—some via Skype—discussing sovereignty, governance, and the nation-state itself in a range of geographic and spatial scenarios, from the Arctic to the Internet. Joining us will be architect Ed Keller; Benjamin Bratton, from the Center for Design and Geopolitics; Tom Cohen, co-editor with Claire Colebrook of the Critical Climate Change series from Open Humanities Press; novelist Peter Watts; architect and urbanist Adrian Lahoud, author of Post-Traumatic Urbanism; and Dylan Trigg, author of, among other things, The Aesthetics of Decay.

This moderated round-table discussion will also explore a joint research project underway this spring for which Ed Keller, Benjamin Bratton, and Geoff Manaugh have been looking at what they call /Google/Arctic/Mars/, analyzing the emergence of a new geography—from the virtual to the off-world—and speculating as to its future political organization.

Finally, for those of you who missed our hugely entertaining visit with landscape designer George Dante, founder of Wildlife Preservations we have uploaded his talk to our Studio-X NYC Vimeo page. Ranging from an artificial mountain constructed in a warehouse in Massachusetts (then shipped via truck to Florida) to an artificial rock hot tub perfectly molded to fit the body of Bill Gates, that video can be found here.

Free and open to the public. No RSVP required.

Time: 7 – 9PM on Tuesday, May 8

Location: Studio X NYC, 180 Varick Street, Suite 1610 (see map)
