As part of the annual Parsons Festival, The School of Fashion at Parsons The New School for Design is pleased to announce Coloring Fashion: Natural and Synthetic Dyeing in Textiles Today. This one day seminar features international experts and discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of historic and contemporary natural and synthetic dyeing.
Speakers will explore the advantages and disadvantages of natural and synthetic dyes, practices, and aesthetic factors within the context of innovative textile and fashion business models, small and large scale production systems, biodiversity, and environmental well-being.
Leaders of the textile, clothing, and fashion sectors are aiming for more ethical, less environmentally harmful, and more socially equitable practices, yet what that involves insofar as textile dyeing is concerned remains difficult to assess. This seminar will explore the matrix of economic, environmental, social, and aesthetic questions associated with Coloring Fashion.
The Seminar
Presentations by experts in the fields of natural and synthetic dyeing will:
- Introduce the history, basic principles and practices of textile dyeing;
- Explore the advantages and disadvantages of natural dye and practices;
- Explore the advantages and disadvantages of synthetic dye and practices;
