In a world where people migrate more often and ideas and goods move faster than ever before, this lecture series examines the resulting cultural fusions and collisions as a source of new insights rather than just a catalyst for conflict. After an introduction to cultural theory, we explore the ways design and art critique and influence culture in the context of globalization.
This lecture is presented by Ezio Manzini, distinguished visiting professor, School of Constructed Environments, Parsons; professor of Industrial Design, Politecnico di Milano, as part of the spring 2012 Global Issues lecture series.
Global Issues in Design and Visuality in the 21st Century: Culture
Spring 2012
Global Issues is a lecture series, open to the the community, which is designed to identify the broad issues that are shaping design and art in the 21st century. It focuses on the concept of culture and its dynamics in light of the radical changes brought about by globalization. In a world where people move more often than ever before and technology circulates ideas and goods faster than ever before, this lecture series views the resulting cultural fusions and collisions as source of new understandings, not just as a catalyst for conflict. Beginning with an introduction to cultural theory, the course proceeds to an examination of the ways in which design and art mirror the state of contemporary culture and the ways in which they critique and change culture.
Presented by Susan Yelavich of the School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons The New School for Design, Global Issues is both a course and a lecture series open to the community.
