Students in the Transdisciplinary Design Graduate program will be presenting the results of their research and design from this spring 2011 semester during which they sought to understand the design realities of the low income food ecosystems. Working with partners in South Bronx, the students will produce a thorough study of the consumption, transportation, and production of food available to the community of Hunts Point. After exploring the processes and agents that affect Hunt Point’s food availability they are proposing socially, environmentally and economically sustainable alternative models. Ultimately thesespeculations should be conceived as design frameworks with the capacity of being adapted to a multitude of environments and locales worldwideThe goal of the studio is not to develop final designs (unrealistic to achieve in 5 months); instead, the overall goal will be to guide understanding, negating and speculating on complex urban conditions, focusing on the intricacies of low income neighborhoods and its delicate urban food ecosystem.

Location: 66 West 12th Street, Wollman Hall at the New School, 5th Floor.
